The fights would not be for specific territories, except maybe you could choose to go for computer controlled territories if there were still any left. Other than that, you'd fight like today, vs anyone online that had a territory and was trying to fight as well.
If someone did NOT fight for a given amount of time, he'd begin losing territories which would go to computer control, so that any other player could take them.

Those are good ideas Geral. Since the dev team is small, they cannot possibly release frequent expansions. Since cards are expendable, it balances cumulative advantage somewhat and eases newer players into the competition.
I had thought your ideas were more business model related though.
