Its not that they are to powerful, they are cheap and if 1 has enough cards they blow you up early game. Its all the how you use them and when. I have thrown them full force early on andstaggered them through out when i needed them. It all depends on map and what you need to happen. Heck some of my mercs dont even make it full 5 heck even 3 sometimes. Its just how people deal with them.

I like mercs, I try using cards like evacuate so that just before they bite the big one they also give me an infantry unit. That way early game I can get an infantry near a far resource quicker
