The Elo system is the system used in Chess, Magic, and other competitive games.
Under the standard elo system, the percentage of each player's change of winning is determined through a formula based on the difference in their rating. If two players are both rated 1800, they would each be assumed to have a 50% chance of winning.
Each match has a K value. That is the number of rating points at issue. If two 50-50 player play a 16K match, the winning player will move up 50% of the K value (8 points) and the losing player will move down 50% of the K value (8 points).
Now, assume a player has a 66.67% of winning a K value 16 match.
If he wins, he only moves up 33% of the points (about 5+) and the loser moves down the same thing (5+). This is because the expected outcome happened, so there should mot be much of a point shift. The system accurately projected the winner.
Now, if the player with a 33% change of winning wins, he goes up 66% of the points (10+) and the loser goes down 10+. There is a bigger shift here because the unexpected happened. That means the loser is probably better than his rank and/or the winner is worse.
So, in short, if you beat a higher rated player you move up a lot. If you beat a lower rated player you move up less. If you have a 2000 rating and you beat someone with a 1500 rating, you move up less than 1 point and they move down less than 1 point. The outcome was supposed to happen and it tells us very little about the accuracy of the ratings, therefore there should nto be much of a move.
Likewise, if you lose to a higher rated player, you only lose a few points. If you lose to a lower rated player you lose a lot.
Now, K value is important. The higher the K value, the more points that are at stake. Tournaments have a higher K value than regular games. Thus, winning a tournament should net you a lot of points.
I believe the adjustment we made to the Elo system only affects players ranked below 1750. If you above 1700, the Elo system is what applies. If you are below 1700, the Elo system still applies, but you get a plus point adjustment -- +1 point if between 1725 and 1750, +2 poitns if 1700, +4 points if 1675, +6 if 1650, +8 points for 1625, +10 for 1600 (this may not be totally accurate, but it is very close)
Thus, if you are 1600 and would have lost 8 points under the Elo system, you lose 8 but gain 10, so you get a +2 for losing. If you would have lost 12 points. You gain 10 and get a -2. So you can go below 1600. However, it is less likely. This was changed so new players would not likely drop below players that had not played.
Again, the adjustment only applies if you are below 1750. If you are above, it is the standard Elo system with no adjustments.
I hope that answered everyone's questions.

I think I know what needs to be done here. You should show a graph here of how much points you lose if you have lets say 1800 and you lose to opponnet with rank from 1500 to 2200.

we played with calculator in chat for a while I guess this k value is 32 for tourneys and 16 for regular games. Result is : you should never lose more than 32 points. If you do report it! (there might be some rounding problem, so lets say 33 is ok )

I'm glad this got changed. It really bothered me that for a while I was ranked lower than people who had never played.
