This looks similar to chess ratings. If you have more points than your enemy, you will lose many points ( I saw 40), if you have much less than enemy, you will lose small amount ( smallest I saw is 3 ). Same amount that is taken from loser is given to winner.

It's similar to the Elo rating system: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_systemYou see similar rating systems in games like Street Fighter IV online. We're considering tweaking our ratings system a bit so that it'll be much harder for people to dip below the initial rating of 1600, though.

Just curious... what would be the problem of going well below 1600?
(other than having to set the intial ranking of new players equally lower, of course)

It sucks for someone to have played 100 matches and not done so well, and be ranked far below someone who's only played 1 match and won. Plus the change would move the "curve", so to speak, into a better position for leaderboard rankings.

Well... but rankings are supposed to work on average; of course the first few games will have a bit of "noise" sort to speak, until a large enough sample of games correctly rates the new player. But I was curious on why the score for a zero-games-played new player is 1600 (or some other high number) and not zero. (which would take care of not going any lower, btw )

LordDerbe wrote: how about removing the loss of points on defeat?^^ Excuse the dumb pun, but what would be the point? Points in a ranking are always relative; it doesn´t really matter if you have 16, 160 or 1600; what really matters is how many peope have over (or under) 16, 160 or 1600 points, an that the top ranked player has 20, 200 or 2000.

Sooo.. whats up with losing more points for 1 loss then the amount of points you get for 2 wins? that just doesn't make sense.
We're being penalized for having a positive win:loss ratio now?
I think this only applies to the players with most points.
Anybody else would like to add anything?

okay, just read the wikipedia page.
So if I understand this correctly, my rating was decreased so much after 1 game because Heinzel beat me, who is a lower rank, but if I played someone with a higher rank and lost there would've been minimal rating loss, correct?
Does this work the opposite way as well in regards to gaining points?
