You can tell a unit to move or to attack a certain units. But if you tell it to target a unit, it moves toward it. This makes it annoying to take advantage of range/vision differences between units. Will there ever be a "attack this guy but don't move?"
Also, will you ever be able to target a base?? It's annoying having 8 guys all trying to go into a corner and attacking random guys

This is what Priority Target is for. If you want to get close to a target or not follow him at all without Pursuing Target, just click Priority Target and click the unit. Your unit will stay in place and fire on that unit until it's destroyed or out of range.
You can also set Priority Target on an HQ for the same effect. Have you tried this out?

OH HECK! sorry... I was thinking y'all meant persuing when y'all mentioned priority target! That helps a LOT with my new 1v1 deck, thank you!
The only buttons I find myself using in that area are (well.. now Priority Target,) Clear Orders, and on occasion Surrender.
